ABOUT
About the Society for Radiobiology and Crisis Planning of the Czech Medical Association of J. E. Purkinje (SRCP CzMA JEP)
The Society for Radiobiology and Crisis Planning of the Czech Medical Association of J. E. Purkinje (SRCP CMA JEP; https://www.srkp.cz/historie-spolecnosti-pro-radiobiologii-a-krizove-planovani/) is a professional association dedicated to advancing knowledge and practice at the intersection of radiobiology, radiation biophysics, radiation medicine, and emergency preparedness. Bringing together researchers, academics, clinicians, medical physicists, public health professionals, and emergency responders, the Society promotes evidence-based approaches to civil and professional radiation protection, clinical management of radiological incidents, and resilient crisis planning at the institutional and national levels. SRCP includes both civilian and military radiobiologists and physicians working on the effects of ionising and non-ionising radiation, crisis management, and disaster medicine. A longer chronicle and historical summary of radiobiology in the Czech Republic is available on the Society’s website (see the link above).
The Society’s principal scientific focus is the biological effects of different types of ionising radiation encountered on Earth and in space, studied across scales from single molecules (nanoscale) to whole organisms and populations. Modern radiobiology at SRCP also addresses non-ionising radiation — in particular, the biological effects of lasers and electromagnetic fields — and clinical applications such as laser therapies and photodynamic therapy developed by Czech research groups.
SRCP is part of the Czech Medical Association of J. E. Purkinje, the largest Czech medical association, which comprises 123 specialised medical societies. This affiliation gives SRCP strong professional standing, broad interdisciplinary links across Czech medicine, and access to extensive networks for research, education, policy development, and clinical collaboration.
The Society promotes high‑quality research and education by fostering collaboration among national and international research and academic institutions and by organising conferences, workshops, and targeted training programmes for professionals, students, and the general public. Our activities provide forums for sharing the latest scientific findings, discussing best practices for clinical care and emergency response, and developing practical tools for hospitals, first responders, and public agencies. Interdisciplinary collaboration is central to our mission — we link basic research, clinical practice, health physics and policy so scientific advances translate into improved awareness‑raising, preparedness, and patient outcomes. Attracting and mentoring enthusiastic students and promoting a balanced, evidence-based public understanding of radiation and its applications are important tasks for the Society.
HISTORY AND MISSION
SRCP was established in February 1992 in Brno as a constituent body of the Czech Medical Association of J. E. Purkinje. Founded to build on a long Czech tradition and strengthen national capabilities in radiobiology and (radiological) emergency planning, SRCP has grown from a professional group into a recognised hub for research, training, and policy advice. Over the years, the Society has organised national and European symposia (for example, ERRS 2009 in Prague), developed training curricula, and contributed to national guidance on radiological incident management. Our mission remains to enhance scientific excellence, professional competence, and societal resilience in the face of radiological and nuclear challenges.
LEADERSHIP AND GOVERNANCE
The Society is governed by an elected Board of experienced researchers, clinicians, and emergency management experts. Leadership priorities include strengthening interdisciplinary research, expanding professional training, mentoring early career scientists, and fostering international partnerships that elevate standards of care and preparedness. Current Chair is Assoc. Prof. Martin Falk, Dr. Rer. Nat., PhD, Vice Chair, is Prof. Leoš Navrátil, MD., CSc., MBA, dr. h. c., and Secretary Treasurer is Col. Gen. Staff, Prof., DVM Zuzana Šinkorová, PhD (https://www.srkp.cz/vybor-srkp/).
INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION
SRCP CMA maintains close cooperation with major international organisations in radiation research and safety, including the European Society for Radiation Research (ERRS), the International Association for Radiation Research (IARR), and the German Society for Biological Radiation Research (deGBS), among others. These collaborations support joint scientific programmes, shared training initiatives, reciprocal participation in conferences, and rapid expert consultation during cross-border incidents.
ROLE AS ICRR 2027 ORGANISER
As the organiser of ICRR 2027, the Society applies its expertise in scientific programme development, multidisciplinary collaboration, and practical crisis preparedness to deliver a conference that is both scientifically rigorous and application-oriented. ICRR‑2027 will showcase leading research in radiation physics and chemistry, radiobiology, space radiation effects, dosimetry, and personalised, more efficient clinical radiological care; sustainable, environmentally friendly (nuclear) energy; and emerging applications of AI. The programme will also include themed symposia, practical hands‑on courses, targeted training sessions, policy dialogues, and extensive cross‑sector networking and capacity‑building opportunities.
ICRR 2027 continues the Society’s tradition of hosting major meetings — notably the 37th Annual Meeting of the European Radiation Research Society (ERRS 2009) in Prague — and follows the historical legacy of earlier ERRS conferences held in the Czech Republic (the 19th ERRS Conference (1985) and the 5th ERRS Conference (1967)).
MEMBERSHIP AND ENGAGEMENT
Membership is open to professionals and students working in radiobiology, radiation medicine, health physics, emergency management, and related fields. Members receive access to educational resources, discounted conference registration, and opportunities to join research groups that shape research agendas and preparedness policies. We welcome international colleagues to collaborate with us in advancing safe, evidence-based responses to radiological and nuclear challenges.
CONTACT
For information about membership, partnerships, or ICRR 2027 activities, please contact the SRCP CMA secretariat (contact details on the Society website). We invite you to join our efforts to strengthen science, training, and preparedness for radiological and nuclear risks.
